Un adolescent, Connor Casserly, est témoin du meurtre sauvage de son père. Il est alors poursuivi par les meurtriers, qui ne veulent aucun témoin. Ils se lancent à sa poursuite, prêts à tout pour le retrouver quitte à causer un véritable massacre. Depuis une tour de guet anti-incendies, Connor est repéré puis secouru par Hannah Faber. Cette dernière est un ancien pompier parachutiste, traumatisée après un accident lors d'une intervention. Elle est aujourd'hui une experte en survie. À travers une forêt du comté de Park dans le Montana en proie aux flammes, Connor et Hannah vont tenter de s'en sortir.
